Industry we operate in

The South African Coal Industry

RBCT was awarded the National Business Initiative’s 2007 Energy Efficiency ETA Award. This is indicative of RBCT’s commitment to energy efficiency in all aspects of its operations, which is viewed as key to the Terminal’s reputation as one of the world’s most globally competitive export coal terminals.
South Africa’s most extensive and productive coal reserves are found in the country’s Mpumalanga province. With reserves equivalent to 11% of the world's total coal reserves, South Africa’s recoverable coal reserves amount to 55 billion tons.

The South African coal sector is one of the few industry sectors to increase employment from 47212 in 2003 to 50 662 in 2004 (+7.4%). RBCT’s Phase V expansion is expected to unleash further local economic growth in small mining towns in the provinces of Mpumalanga and KwaZulu Natal.

Energy Efficiency

RBCT is one of the signatories to the Energy Efficiency Accord signed on 17 August 2006, which commits the company to the National Energy Saving Agenda of improving energy savings by 12-15% by 2015. The first phase of RBCT’s energy-savings initiatives to continuously measure and monitor targets and integrate the energy saving imperative as part of RBCT's business objectives and culture has been completed. As a result, the Energy Efficiency ETA award received by RBCT in 2007 was indicative of the success that has been achieved to date.

Team Yongamandla, a group of carefully selected employees to play a strategic role in energy efficiency, is currently working on further initiatives that will see RBCT play a much more significant role in energy saving initiatives.
