Transformation
Progress in the transformation of the coal mining industry is being made on several fronts, including:
- Ownership
- Skills Development
- Procurement
- Employment Equity
- Community Enterprise Development
- Corporate Social Investment
More than 20% of the South African coal sector is now owned and controlled by Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) parties, with more than 20 BEE deals having been concluded at a value of approximately R19 billion.
Currently 4m tons of coal from emerging black exporters is handled by RBCT and this tonnage will increase with the Phase V expansion. The main aim of the Phase V expansion is to enable BEE coal exporters to expand their global footprint.
Specific details on RBCT’s own transformation efforts are detailed under the Economic Overview section.
