RBCT Annual Charity Relay Run - Carrying the Baton for Charity
29 July 2007 marks the 23rd anniversary of RBCTs Annual Charity Relay Run in Richards Bay. A highlight on the regions athletics calendar, the 49.2km relay run is the second largest sporting event in Zululand attracting more than 2 000 runners and walkers and some 7 000 spectators each year. All proceeds raised from this event go towards deserving local charity organisations.
RBCTs 2006 Charity Relay Run raised in excess of R80 000 for local charities, which in turn, put these annual donations to good use in their respective operations in a range of interventions that have a far-reaching and positive impact in the local communities within which RBCT operates.
The Rotary Club of Richards Bay focuses on poverty alleviation, the supply of potable water, care for the elderly and the terminally ill and adult literacy. Rotary combined the donation from RBCTs 2006 Charity Relay Run with funds raised from its own fundraising initiatives, and spread the benefits to other local beneficiaries including Family Care, Hospice, and Amangwe Village Eas well as to a number of rural schools and communities for the supply of potable water.
The NSRIs Sea Rescue Station 19 used its donation towards its annual operating expenditure of R200 000 that is needed to respond to water-users in distress on Zululands various coastal and inland waterways. NSRI is reliant on the public and private sectors for donations to meet Station 19s costs to maintain its 22-year old vessel The Spirit of Richards BayEand the funding of its new base in Richards Bay.
The Sea Scouts used their donation to carry out critical fumigation to extend the life of its timber-framed Scout Hall which had become infested with termites, while the SPCA matched its donation from RBCT and purchased fencing for its kennel gates and runways, providing additional safety for the animals that it shelters.
Richards Bay Family Care utilised its donation for its Foster Care Programme. As part of this programme, Richards Bay Family Care runs three support groups for foster parents and children, and provides a supervision service to 295 children in foster care, the majority of who were orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS.
The Thuthukani Special School used its funds to carry out long-overdue structural repairs; to install a cement pathway for wheelchairs and to support its feeding programme.
The Round Table 200 in Richards Bay spread their donation to a number of community projects that they champion. Their recipients include Family Care, Hospice, DICE (Do I Care Enough), Amangwe Village and many more.
The needs of our local communities are great; and the finish lineEis far from sight for many deserving charitable organisations as they strive to meet these needs. RBCT is proud to carry the baton for their worthy causes through the continued sponsorship and co-ordination of the RBCT Annual Charity Relay Run.
